Protein (summary)

Proteins are an essential part of the human body. They make up a major part of the skin, muscles, organs, and glands. You need protein in your diet to help repair cells and make new ones, especially your muscles.

Proteins can be classified as beans, pulses, fish, eggs, and meats.

Beans and pulses are good alternatives to meat as they are low in fat and high in protein, fibre, vitamins, and minerals.

You should aim to have two portions of sustainably sourced fish per week, one of which is oily.

It is also good to eat less red and processed meat such as sausages, bacon, and cured meats. If you eat more than 90 g a day, you should try to cut down to no more than 70 g per day.

To keep meat lean, it is good practice to remove skin and visible fat from meat and poultry.
